We Wish You Safe Travels – Especially in Bad Weather

badweather1Winter is approaching and the northern states and the Rockies are bracing for snowstorms. The midsection of the country is ready for the leftover winds and rain. And no matter where you live, there are always fog and high winds to contend with this time of year.

So print this out, keep it, or give it to a loved one – especially a teen driver. It could save your life.

Helpful Hints for Harsh Conditions

Three things are a must: always keep a safe following distance, and make sure your windows are clear, and slow down!

You may be a good driver, but not everyone else is. If you have an SUV or a 4×4 vehicle, you’re not immune from slippery and wet roads. They’re more effective, but state troopers say they won’t help you stop faster in bad weather. You can end up in a ditch or roll over just as easily as a sedan.

SNOW:
-If weather warnings say stay off the roads, stay off the roads.
-Carry a winter survival kit. Those can be found at most local automotive stores.
-Don’t bother weighing down the back of your vehicle unless you’ve got a pick-up. You can actually increase your chances of skidding.

RAIN:
-When rainwater mixes with residual oil dust and other debris on the surface, things get slick. Give yourself even more space between you and the car in front of you.
-Don’t make sudden steering or breaking moves; you could skid out of control.
-Use your headlights, especially on two-lane roads. Some states require it.

FOG:
-Do not use your high-beams because the fog will reflect them back to you.
-Again, slow down. State troopers say some of the biggest accidents resulting in multiple deaths were caused by a combination of dense fog and drivers who didn’t slow down. It’s OK to drive below the posted speed limit if you have poor visibility.
-If the fog is just too thick, get off the road immediately.

WIND:
-If you drive a truck, SUV, RV or are pulling a trailer, you’re especially at risk.
-Everyone should be careful when driving close to trucks, buses and other high-profile vehicles. One gust can send one into your lane.
-Be careful not to over-correct steering, especially in open areas.
