You’re driving down the road, maybe listening to the radio, when you hear it. You turn down the radio and listen for it again. Yep. There it is. So how do you know if you should drive over to visit our service department or not? Listening carefully to that sound will often give you your answer.
Name That Tune to Name the Problem
THUMP THUMP: from one or more tires. It happens at low speeds, especially in the morning, and it speeds up with the car. You most likely have a flat-spotted tire. – You don’t need to rush in and see us. You can live with the annoying sound, or we can replace your tires.
FFFFfffttt FFFfffttt FFFFffftt: from under the hood. You notice it when you’re idling. – An exhaust manifold gasket has failed. That means hot exhaust gases are venting into the air. Come see us right away. This problem won’t correct itself, and carbon monoxide from the leak can be deadly.
EEEEEEEeeeee: from inside the wheels. It happens when you slow down, and it’s worse on damp days.
- Your brake pads probably still work OK, but that sound probably won’t go away. Once we replace those brake pads, it should.
SSSSSSSSSSSS: from under the hood. You hear it almost all the time, but more so when you’re idling.
- This sounds like a vacuum leak. A rubber or plastic vacuum line or fitting has split or fallen apart. There’s a good chance your Check Engine light is also on. Bring it in so we can reconnect or replace the line.
GrumbleGrumble: from the front of the vehicle when it’s idling.
- This is often a sign the water pump bearings are failing. To avoid a big crack in your radiator and a big leak, come see us so we can put in a new pump.
We know there are hundreds of other sounds that tell us something needs to be fixed. If you don’t know what your sound is, bring it in. The difference between a hiss or a squeak could be the difference between an annoying sound and a dangerous vehicle.
