There are three things to keep in mind: prevention, products and professionals.

• A fresh coat of polymer wax at the start of the season is a good idea. You may have heard about using cooking spray or WD-40 on the front of your car. DO NOT. This can harm your finish.
• Wash your car or truck once a week. Don’t scrub. Think gentle. Let “target” areas soak in soapy water.
• Clean off bugs or droppings ASAP. Keep a microfiber towel and a bottle of quick detail spray in your car. If residue hardens, it can damage the paint finish on your hood, roof or the front grill.

• If a quick wash doesn’t do the trick, head over to the local auto parts store. There are several products designed just for scrubbing off what nature has left behind. Most require a little “elbow grease”, but often work better than soap and water.
• If it seems your paint is damaged after you’ve cleaned the area, don’t get anxious. Many cars just need a few washes and a few weeks, and the stains or bugs will go away.
• In some cases, bugs or bird droppings can actually etch the clear coat. The internet is a great tool, but it’s hard to tell advice from advertisements. And what works for your neighbor’s car might not work for yours.
