Car Dealer Scams to Avoid

Choose your dealership as carefully as you choose your car.

OK — they’re not all out to rip you off. Most are just out to make an honest dollar. But if you’re going out to buy a new car, you’ll want to make sure you know what you’re doing.

Here are some things you’ll want to watch out for:

NEWSPAPERS ADS – When a vehicle’s advertised price appears too good to be true, there’s always a catch. Either the dealer has only one vehicle available at that price (the dented one which may have already even been sold) or, the advertised price will not include:

(a) destination and delivery fees (+$625)
(b) carpeted floormats (+$186)
(c) dealer prep fee (+as much as $300)

In many cases, the advertised price will already include (although in very small print):

(a) a $400 recent college graduate rebate (the ad assumes you are eligible)

Many consumers will visit one of these dealerships because of their misleading ads. And that’s exactly what these dealers want you to do. They want you to visit their showroom where they can control most everything.

ADMs – If you see an ADM fee listed anywhere in your paperwork, immediately demand that it be removed and walk out if they won’t. ADM means “additional dealer markup”, in other words, it’s the additional price they’ve decided to charge above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Never pay it. Ever.

At Reed Brothers Dodge, we do not believe that our customers want to be treated that way. We always make an effort to be upfront and professional in our approach.
