Car Technology of the Future

The folks at Cars.com have looked into their crystal ball and examined industry trends and news reports to come up with 15 innovations predicted to be available in cars sometime in the next 10 years. From self-parking cars to chipless paint, every innovation marks a trouble-easing aid for mankind.

“You can find some of these innovations on the market today, and the technology exists to incorporate many of these innovations in the near future,” said Patrick Olsen of Cars.com. “Cost and consumer demand will help determine whether these innovations become standard, become options for select luxury vehicles — or never make it out of development.”

Cool Stuff That’s Been Talked About

Advanced Flexible Fuel Systems
In addition to widely available hydrogen-powered cars and clean diesel cars, Cars.com envisions a car that could run on all types of fuel interchangeably. You could have one car that could run on gas, diesel, hydrogen, E85 and electric power. Your mileage would increase and you could use whatever fuel was cheapest — or available. Research into hydrogen fuel cells has been in the works for years, and there are already cars that can run on E85 and gas, as well as hybrids that can run on gas and battery power. Now we need to figure out how to combine all technologies into one car.

Active Tires

Airless tires would be great, but wouldn’t it be even cooler to have tires made from some sort of synthetic compound that could change to handle different road conditions with the push of a button? One set of tires could take you from summer to winter or, better yet, handle an unexpected rainstorm.

True Autopilot

In some ways, we’re still far from the cars most of us thought we’d be driving by now. True autopilot — where the navigation system guides the car to its destination while the driver sits back and relaxes — is a huge, futuristic step in the right direction. Whether through an extension of GPS or with the aid of magnets in the road, research into this technology is already under way.

Down the Road (Coming in 3-5 years)

Lane Changer Warning
Time frame: Three years
Cars would monitor traffic in adjacent lanes to let the driver know when it’s safe to change lanes.

Camless Engines
Time frame: Three years
Like the human body, engines demand airflow based on workload. A complex array of tubes, valves and camshafts facilitates this process, but it has nowhere near the flexibility of our lungs. Camless technology bridges the gap, better controlling the amount of air that’s drawn into the engine. The result: more power, less pollution and better mileage.

Self-Repairing, Self-Cleaning Paint

Time frame: Three years
Imagine paint that can better resist and repair minor scratches and withstand marks from things like greasy fingers and tree sap.

Navigation Systems With Real-Time Traffic Information

Time frame: Three years
All cars with navigation systems would be able to integrate real-time traffic data in order to alert drivers to road construction issues or traffic snarls while providing alternate routes.

Self-Parking Cars
Time frame: Four years
Self-parking cars would utilize a system that parks a car with either minimal or no help from the driver.

Electric Window Tinting
Time frame: Five years
Electric window tinting could take windows or a moonroof from clear to tinted to even opaque with the push of a button. Maybach already offers a panoramic glass roof that can be switched from opaque to transparent, but not many of us can afford a Maybach.

Around the Corner (Here now, or within 2 years)

Keyless Entry and Ignition
Time frame: One year
A number of cars already offer keyless entry and ignition, but their use isn’t widespread. Combine that with biotechnology access (like the fingerprint scanners at grocery stores and on some laptop computers) and the key chain is on the road to obsolescence.

Adaptive Brake Lights
Time frame: Two years
Adaptive brake lights get brighter or larger depending on how hard the brake pedal is depressed, telling the driver behind you how quickly you are stopping.

Computer Center
Time frame: Two years
Computers used for the operation of your car have been around for some time, but this is a master in-dash computer that can manage navigation, phones, email, CDs, a PDA and every other new techno-gadget we come up with. Some Chrysler models have a system called MyGig with Bluetooth capability and a built-in hard drive that can rip CDs like your home computer.

Automotive Black Box
Time frame: Two years
Airplanes have the ability to record trip details, so why not cars? An automotive black box could be invaluable in an accident, keep tabs on a new driver, help frequent speeders monitor their mph — or it could be a big invasion of privacy.

Economy Mode
Time frame: Two years
If drivers can’t change their driving behavior to increase gas mileage, cars may do it for them. In economy mode, a car turns off non-essential systems, turns down the A/C and even engages cruise control to conserve fuel.

Chrysler Working on Dodge Hornet Concept Based Model

Consumers are looking to buy smaller cars these days forcing many of the world’s automakers to focus development into the smaller models and it appears Chrysler is no different. According to a report by Financial Times Deutschland development is underway for an all new compact car based on the Dodge Hornet concept car (pictured) which was first presented at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show.

The new model is likely to be launched in a number of worldwide markets including United States and Europe with the initial unveiling expected sometime next year ready for a 2010 launch.

Thomas Hausch, vice president for international purchasing said “We are working intensely on the Hornet study and I think we will announce something on this in the future.” He also refused to rule out the possibility the Chrysler brand will build an even smaller economy model that would slot in below the 2-liter Sebring.

Family Road Trips May Never Be The Same

Never talk on family vacations again: Chrysler’s In-Car WiFi

Chrysler has announced that in-car Internet hotspots will be available as an option on all new models for around $500. The service, offered through Autonet Mobile, combines a cellular EVDO modem with a WiFi hotspot to offer constant conductivity within a 100 foot radius of the vehicle—making it “convenient to access the Internet at a soccer field or family picnic,” according to the announcement.

Chrysler calls the new system UConnect Web and says it will be available in August. The best part seems to be the price, which is $29 a month for apparently unlimited data use (though if you already pay for an EVDO card, you’ll have to cough up again to get the service in the car).

Dodge Challenger SRT Drag Pack

Chrysler isn’t releasing the details on this non-street-legal, drag-race ready model yet, but earlier reports suggest an overall weight savings of around 800 pounds by stripping the interior down to the bare essentials (one seat, a set of gauges and no sound deadening material), nixing the wipers and A/C and replacing many of the body panels with composite material. The front brakes will also be modified, along with the rear end and front crossmember, and a roll cage is assuredly part of the package. As for power, expect a big HEMI V8 under the hood producing over 500 hp and close to 500 lb.-ft. of torque. Final pricing details and specification are expected to be released closer to its launch in July. View the exclusive video of Dodge’s drag pack:

Chrysler & Nissan Play to Strengths, Swap Cars & Trucks

On April 14, 2008, Chrysler and Nissan announced a major product cooperation deal that would allow both automakers to focus on their current product strengths while expanding their lineups with new entries. Beginning in 2010 Nissan will start making a new small car for Chrysler while a year later, Chrysler will start building a new full-size pickup truck for Nissan. The small car will be built to a Chrysler design and will be sold in North America, Europe, and other markets. The truck will be built for Nissan at Chrysler’s Saltillo Mexico assembly plant starting 2011 and will presumably replace the current Titan pickup.

Nissan has been looking for a diesel engine supplier for some time for the Titan and this deal will likely allow them to use the new Cummins light duty diesel that is debuting next year. It’s not known at this time if Nissan will get a heavy duty pickup out this deal. Another unknown is whether Nissan will get a truck equipped with the two-mode hybrid system that is debuting in the Ram in 2010.

World’s Smallest Production Car

Peel’s best known car, the P50, is recognized by the Guiness Book of World Records as the smallest road-legal car ever produced. It was manufacturd in 1962 by Manx Peel Engineering Company. It has only one door, one headlight and a single windscreen wiper. At just 53 inches long, 39 inches wide, and 132 lbs, the Peel 50 was the smallest three-wheeled “car” ever produced. It has a motorcycle engine, there is no reverse; rather a ‘Reversing Handle’ fitted on the back to pick the car up and turn it around. It was tiny enough to park manually, as shown above, with the the front or rear handle. What’s not to love about this car, other than the fact that you’ll die if you drive it on the road.

Dodge Challenger Convertible Coming in 2010

The 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 recently hit the market and Craig Jackson and Jay Leno have already brought the first two models. So far, a total of 1,000 units have been built and delivered to their rightful owners. Dodge also announced the pricing for the 2009 Dodge Challenger which starts at $21,995.

Production for the 2009 models will kick off later in August and Dodge will begin producing the non-SRT8 models, the SE and R/T. However, come the later part of 2009, the Dodge Challenger will lose its top in an attempt to challenge the upcoming Chevrolet Camaro.

Expected arrival time is in the second-half of 2009 as a 2010 model. Expect powertrains to remain the same, however we’re not too sure if Chrysler will throw the HEMI in for the convertible version.

Chrysler Cars With In-Car Internet & Wi-Fi This Year

Chrysler has announced its intention to bring internet access to its vehicles. The functionality will be added to existing models this year, and will be followed by assembly line produced, internet ready automobiles. The connections will rely on mobile phone towers and a monthly subscription charge will be levied on those taking up the service.

Chrysler says the in-car WiFi will be available wherever cellular service is offered (pretty much anywhere you can take a car these days) and have a range of about 100 feet. The system’s range capability means you won’t actually have to be in your car to use the system.
